Why Is NO ONE Telling Us This about Melatonin?
Melatonin, it’s a hormone that you can’t live without.
And it’s a hormone I’m always trying to optimize in my patients.
The reason we need it is because every single day our bodies rely on melatonin to figure out if it’s time to go to bed or if it’s time to wake up.
The power of melatonin is in its ability to regulate up Circadian rhythm.
We know a lot about melatonin as a society. That’s why so many people struggling with sleep issues take a melatonin supplement. It’s been deemed as the “go-to” natural solution for sleep.
I’m glad people are starting to rely on melatonin over other kinds of sleep aids.
For one, melatonin is safe to use daily. You can’t become dependent on it either. After all, melatonin is something that your body produces on its own, and if you’re not making enough then taking a supplemental form of melatonin isn’t going to hurt anything.
But what I’m really excited about is how much more we’re learning about melatonin.
What you may not know is melatonin is one of the world’s most powerful antioxidants!
A group of scientists ran a comprehensive analysis of melatonin and said that it “under promises and over delivers” as an antioxidant.
Here’s what they wrote in their abstract of their study: “Melatonin is uncommonly effective in reducing oxidative stress under a remarkably large number of circumstances. It achieves this action via a variety of means: direct detoxification of reactive oxygen and reactive nitrogen species and indirectly by stimulating antioxidant enzymes while suppressing the activity of pro‐oxidant enzymes.”
So what exactly does that mean for you?
Glad you asked, I’ll explain how melatonin can support your health.
Why Melatonin May Be The Best Antioxidant To Take
For anyone who’s been following my writing, you know that I’ve written about the power of glutathione as an antioxidant.
In the integrative community we refer to glutathione as the “master antioxidant” because it has insane antioxidant qualities and also helps your body recycle and recirculate other antioxidants.
There’s little doubt that glutathione along with a few other antioxidants are in the hall of fame for antioxidants.
But now, I think that melatonin might end up being considered at the top of the class in hall-of-fame antioxidants…
In fact, the writers at Pharmacy Times said it might be the strongest of all antioxidants:
“The antioxidant effects of melatonin are so strong, they are thought to be strong and more potent than glutathione,2 vitamin C3, and vitamin E.” they write.
So what exactly can it do for you?
Well, aside from helping restore balance to your circadian rhythm and sleeping better, there are a number of other ways that its antioxidant power can help to support great health.
1 – It Can Keep Your Heart Healthy:
The importance of maintaining a healthy cardiovascular system can never, ever be underestimated. You can live with one kidney, and you can live with portions of your lungs missing.
But if any part of your cardiovascular health is compromised it can lead to a host of concerns.
Studies indicate that taking a melatonin supplement could be influential in supporting the health of your heart.
The antioxidant nature of melatonin keeps your body in a steady state of regulating inflammation and as it’s a free radical scavenger. It can help to support your cardiovascular system by helping to keep cells in your arterial system as well as in your heart safe and protected.
That means blood pressure can be maintained within the normal range which I’m going to remind you is necessary for perfect health.
2 – Helps Your Body’s Immune System Run Like a Well-Oiled Machine
After the pandemic, the critical importance of having a healthy immune system became the hot topic of alternative and conventional health circles.
Antioxidants are critically important to helping your immune system function.
Remember, the only way your immune system knows how to fight pathogens is by responding to localized trauma or infections.
Antioxidants help to keep all of your cells healthy by preventing free radicals from exerting negative effects on their DNA.
When they do that, it means your cells, specifically immune cells, can operate with maximum efficiency.
“A 2013 scientific review called melatonin an “immune buffer” because it appears to act as a stimulant in an immunosuppressive condition — plus it also behaves as an anti-inflammatory compound when there’s an intensified immune response, like in the case of acute inflammation.”
3 – May Help To Boost Essential Hormone Production
Here at Robinhood Integrative Health (our clinic in Winston-Salem, NC), we’re always looking to help optimize hormone levels.
Most people who suffer from some kind hormone deficiency, are in a state of lack because other hormone levels are low.
And thus, if you have a melatonin deficiency, the odds other hormone levels are off tend to be high.
Human Growth Hormone (HGH) levels seem to be linked to melatonin production, and there are studies that show when people take it that HGH levels will rise. A study published in the journal Clinical Endocrinology showed that already healthy men under the age of 40 benefited from melatonin supplementation and had HGH levels rise when taking this supplement.
And HGH production isn’t all that melatonin supplementation can assist. Research suggests that low doses of melatonin could also help your body release the “feel good” hormone oxytocin along with vasopressin levels. This may help to positively affect your mood, blood pressure levels and more.
4 – Helps to Keep Your Brain Healthy:
The mark of a truly powerful antioxidant is how it helps to keep your body’s most important organ healthy and strong.
Melatonin is actually produced in your brain, (it’s released from the pineal gland), and if you supplement with a melatonin you’re sending extra back to your brain so that it remains.
Dr. Axe writes: “It seems to improve neuronal survival and may be able to help protect the cholinergic system against oxidative stress and inflammation.”
