A Possible Side Effect Of “Going Keto”
Keto, short for ketogenic, is the newest diet craze to sweep the nation.
If you’ve been in my office or read my emails lately you know I’m all aboard the keto train.
To be honest, when it comes to diets I don’t view the ketogenic diet like a traditional weight-loss diet.
And that’s because the ketogenic diet doesn’t require you to starve yourself to lose weight… it doesn’t force you to subsist on foods you loathe to eat… and it doesn’t really have any glaring problems associated with it.
That being said, there are a few issues with the ketogenic diet I want to address.
Like anything, there may be side-effects of the ketogenic diet, and as a physician looking to enhance your total health, I view it as my responsibility to make sure you’re aware of what they are.
But First Let Me Explain What Keto Is For Those Who Don’t Know
If you’re reading this and you have no idea what I mean when I say “going keto” I’ll give you a crash course on the ketogenic diet.
The ketogenic diet isn’t so much a “diet” as it is a way of switching what kind of food you eat to fuel your body.
There are two kinds of fuel your body will burn if given the chance.
Sugar…and fat.
Most people who eat a Standard American Diet (SAD) will burn sugar as fuel. This is because sugar (or carbohydrates) are in almost everything they eat. Whether that’s pasta, bread, sugary drinks, pastries, sugar-laden fruits, and the list goes on.
When your body relies on sugar as fuel it has a bad habit of storing sugar it never burns up as fat.
And the fat you eat? Well, that never gets burned as fuel (your body chooses to burn sugar first since it’s easier to break down) and it also gets stored away in your body.
When you “go keto” that simply means that you consume few sugars and carbs (generally under 50 grams) throughout the day.
Once this happens your body enters ketosis.
Ketosis is a metabolic process in which your body uses available dietary fat as fuel. Once it burns up all the fat you eat it moves on to search through your body for stored fat and burn that for fuel.
This is why keto is considered one of the best “diets” for fat loss and weight loss.
Here’s a great video that sums it up for you.
Now, The Possible Side-Effect Of the Ketogenic Diet
One of the primary side effects of going keto is that when your body starts breaking down stored fat for energy toxins are released into your body’s bloodstream.
Now I don’t want you to be frightened and hear this as a warning to not try ketosis.
However, I want to temper the claim that keto’s great, by showing you the reality of the ketogenic diet.
Fat is a natural storage center for toxins.
And fat really likes to hang onto chemicals known as persistent organic pollutants (called POPs).
POPs are found in the air you breathe, the chemicals your skin comes in contact with, even the foods you eat.
The problem with POPs beyond the fact that they’re pollutants is that they don’t break down easily.
And generally, once they’re lodged inside your fat cells, they’re there until that fat releases them during metabolism.
The problem with POPs sitting in your fat for years… or flooding into your bloodstream after being released from broken down fat is that they’re quite dangerous.
As the guys and gals over at PaleoLeap wrote:
“High concentrations of POPs are associated with a higher risk of chronic diseases: here’s a study linking them to high blood pressure, here’s one on cholesterol, and here’s one linking them to diabetes. And there’s also some evidence that these chemicals can cause weight gain, by modifying the way that genes are expressed in fat cells.”
If you lose any significant amount of fat those POPs have to go somewhere (remember: they don’t break down!). This study explains the two options:
• Option 1: POPs get progressively more concentrated in the smaller amount of fat tissue remaining on your body.
• Option 2: Alternately, when adipose tissue is broken down, the POPs get redistributed into other tissues. Tissues like your brain, where you definitely don’t want them.”
As you can surmise, that’s not exactly the best thing for your health.
So if you’re going to go keto, you need to support your body’s natural detoxification processes.
Introducing the Ketox Shake – The Ketogenic Drink That Supports Healthy Detoxification
As more and more of my patients have been switching to a ketogenic diet I’ve grown concerned with the release of POPs into their bloodstream.
Typically I recommend patients eat foods that are high in antioxidants, which are known to help support the liver in its natural detoxification processes.
These include leafy green vegetables as well as a variety of berries.
However, there are 2 problems with this recommendation many of my patients run into.
Problem 1: My patients don’t want to eat loads of kale, collards, spinach etc. While leafy greens are some of the best foods to eat for detox, it’s hard to eat a lot of them because of the way they taste.
Problem 2: For anyone who wishes to stay in ketosis, filling up on berries and “detox fruits” poses an interesting problem in that they add too many sugars to the diet. Too much sugar and the whole “keto thing” goes out the window.
Because I knew so many of my patients were dealing with these issues I decided to do something about it.
Which is why I created the Ketox Shake.
The Ketox Shake from Health As It Ought To Be is a meal replacement shake.
It helps control cravings so you don’t eat food you don’t want to and fall out of ketosis and it helps to keep you in ketosis as it gives your body the precise blend of fat, protein and carbohydrates needed to keep you burning fat.
And best of all is the Ketox Shake provides you with a custom blend of extracts from the world’s best-known detox agents.
These include:
• Acerola
• Acai Berry
• Amia
• Jabuticaba
• Cranberry
• Goji
• Mangosteen
• Maqui Berry
• Pomegranate
• Strawberry
• Schisandra
I recommend the Ketox Shake as a complete meal replacement, or as a snack when you’re feeling hungry but don’t want to eat any foods that’ll knock you out of keto.
There are 3 types of people I recommend the Ketox Shake to.
• For anyone who’s just starting the keto diet.
• Those who’ve been eating keto for a while and still have a lot of fat to lose.
• Anyone who eats keto and needs help fighting cravings.
The Ketox Shake is flavored with Zero-Calorie monk fruit which won’t spike your insulin.
It tastes delicious.
And if taken in part with a ketogenic diet it may help you lose weight and will support healthy detoxification.
