This Could Change Your Opinion On Salmon

Salmon, an oddly spelled word that is pronounced differently than it’s spelled.

What gives?  I’m not sure to be honest, I do know someone named Salmon appears in the bible, though, so it’s clear that this ancient word has some serious staying power.

And salmon the fish on the other hand, definitely has some staying power.

I’ve written about salmon frequently and that’s because this fish is rich in one of the healthiest fats known to man: Omega 3 fatty acids.

Surprisingly, I’m not here to talk about Omega 3 fatty acids, instead I’m here to talk about an antioxidant called astaxanthin.

Astaxanthin is a carotenoid, which are “yellow, orange, and red organic pigments that are produced by plants and algae, as well as several bacteria, and fungi. Carotenoids give the characteristic color to pumpkins, carrots, corn, tomatoes, canaries, flamingos, salmon, lobster, shrimp, and daffodils”.

And based on the fact that salmon eat large amounts of algae, they’re what help to give salmon their deep reddish/orange color. Other animals rich in astaxanthin are krill and lobster.

But what’s so great about this pigment?

Several things actually, and all of them serve to help boost various factors of health. From eye health to heart health you can’t ignore the amazing benefits provided by astaxanthin.

Also, I’m going to use this time to make a shameless product pitch right here.

We’ve got an amazing version of Astaxanthin in the store called Life Extension Astaxanthin with Phospholipids. This version of astaxanthin is one of the best because of a secret ingredient (which I’ll talk about later) that helps your body absorb it much better.

Ok, having said that I’d love to let you in on the secrets behind what make astaxanthin a stellar health-supporting supplement.

Good Reasons To Let Astaxanthin Help Change Your Life

Carotenoids like astaxanthin serve to support our health in a myriad of ways.

What astaxanthin does is nothing short of a miracle.

1 – It Helps Support Perfect Vision:

One of the chief reasons I have patients take astaxanthin has to do with how astaxanthin helps to support eye health.

The way it works is forming a shield around your eye cells by way of shielding it from  oxidative damage. In a study from 2008 researchers demonstrated that astaxanthin was able to maintain retinal cell health by keeping oxidative damage at bay.

And another study featuring 48 adults who had problems with eye strain discovered that astaxanthin plus a few other ingredients was able to make it so their eye strain was significantly less.

A unique factor in how astaxanthin helps to boost eye health has to do with how it’s able to cross the blood-eye barrier. Because it can do this so well it’s superior at supporting vascular health within the eye which many other “eye-health” nutrients can’t do.

2 – It Helps Keep Your Heart Healthy:

A healthy heart is the foundation of a great life.

Astaxanthin helps to serve your heart in a myriad of ways.

Dr. Axe observes several things about how astaxanthin is able to maintain superior cardiovascular health.

“According to a 2009 review out of Australia, there have been at least eight clinical studies measuring the effects of astaxanthin that have shown that astaxanthin supplementation may lower markers of both inflammation and oxidative stress. (6) Another review published in the journal Marine Drugs suggested that astaxanthin could protect against [major heart concerns] and help to prevent the buildup of fat and cholesterol in the arteries.”

Another way it helps the heart is by letting heart cells work while keeping them as free and clear from oxidative stress as possible as well as promoting the sustainment of healthy cholesterol levels.

3 – Keeps the Brain In Great Shape:

Oxidative stress has a way of shaping the development of your brain.

If you have too much oxidative stress there’s a chance your brain may suffer.

On the other hand, if you start early enough, you can help to keep your brain in great shape through the use of carotenoid antioxidants like astaxanthin.

How exactly?

Well, astaxanthin can help to keep neurons firing and this can help to maintain cognition, ease states of confusion as well as temporary anxiety.

There’s a decent amount of research indicating that if you take astaxanthin it could help to ensure your brain and your thinking never misses a beat.

There are recent studies from 2016 that indicate taking astaxanthin can actually help with creating new brain cells and even increased spatial memory (this study was done in mice). And another study which was published in the journal GeroScience were able to show that astaxanthin could support brain function by offering neuroprotective benefits and could even help reduce oxidative stress and support response to inflammation.

Buyer Beware: Not All Astaxanthin Is Created Equal

Just so you know, most astaxanthin doesn’t work that well when you take it on its own.

That’s because it has poor bioavailability.

Fortunately Life Extension Astaxanthin with Phospholipids is super bioavailable as they combined astaxanthin with 4 phospholipids (code for fats) that make it so your body will absorb it much better.

The combination of fat and this powerful antioxidant can help in all the ways I described above and more!
