If you’ve been paying attention to the articles I write, you’ll remember I speak out against drinking sodas.
Most sodas, especially the ones you find in your normal grocery store, aren’t just sugar bombs that burn a hole in your pocket…they’re extremely dangerous to your health.
Of course, everything in moderation; if you’re going to enjoy a soda here and there, it’s not the end of the world.
But anyone who thinks they can drink a soda a day and be fine needs to reevaluate their diet.
Part of the reason people think sodas are OK to drink regularly is because the soda industry constantly produces propaganda (yep, that’s what it is) to make you think their product is fine for your health.
Soda companies also pay their way into making you believe their products are healthy.
An investigation into the sordid practices of these companies reveals these behemoths spend millions of dollars to deceive people about the health-altering quality of their products.
It’s actually much worse than you might think.
In an article published in the American Journal of Preventative Medicine, study authors illuminated just how shady the soda companies really are.
Two of the largest, Coca-Cola and PepsiCo, actually used their profits to sponsor “a minimum of 96 national health organizations between 2011-2015.”
Meaning they basically paid health organizations to come out in favor of their products.
Worse yet is how major soda companies have spent millions of dollars (and in some cases your tax dollars) to fight health bills that aim to help people make more informed decisions about their health!
Researchers Daniel Aaron and co-author Dr. Michael Siegel announced in their findings that organizations, whom you’d never think would take pay-offs, actually did.
These included the American Diabetes Association and the Diabetes Research Foundation.
Kinda crazy when you realize there’s a proven connection between soda consumption and diabetes.
Even crazier? How they actually managed to find out the kind of information they did.
Coca-Cola keeps public records of their donations, so they left a trail for researchers to follow. PepsiCo, on the other hand, keeps all of their donation records secret. They really don’t want you to know why they’re giving money to!
Despite this unfortunate truth, we still learned a lot through the publication of this research.
“Over the 5-year period, the team identified a total of 96 national health organizations that accepted money from the companies. Of these, 83 accepted money from Coca-Cola, one accepted money from PepsiCo, and 12 accepted money from both companies.”
Makes you pretty upset to see how money can control so much of the information out there, doesn’t it?
And this is what’s going to make you really mad…
Combined, the two companies spent $9 million dollars between 2011-2014 to battle bills promoting lower soda consumption.
Aaron and Siegel said, “Just like previous investigations into the tobacco and alcohol industries – their results suggest the soda industry is using ‘corporate philanthropy’ as a marketing tool to ‘silence health organizations that might otherwise lobby and support public health measures against these industries.’ “
