One Of My Favorite Low Cost Supplements Of All Time
If you’ve ever been to our office, then you know we have a store where we offer our patients a wide variety of supplements at a low cost.
Now I think this should go without saying, but I feel the need to emphasize the following:
None of the physicians who practice in our office set off on a journey of becoming a doctor just so they could sell supplements. Seriously, when we began medical school, and went through residency, rotations, and all that good stuff it wasn’t just so we could sell a handful of supplements to our patients.
We just want to see people get better, and because we have an aversion to relying exclusively on pharmaceuticals to manage sickness, we advise supplements to correct issues from the ground up.
The physical and online stores we run are only here to provide people who are serious about taking control of their health a means of gaining access to much-needed supplements so they can feel better.
And while the variety of products we offer to our patients runs the gamut, there are some supplements I value over others.
Not that I play favorites or anything, it’s just some supplements pack a little more “oomph” than others.
One of my favorite supplements by far is N-Acetyl Cysteine, or NAC for short.
As you’ll see, this inexpensive compound is remarkably powerful, and I believe every single person could benefit from keeping it on hand.
5 Incredible Benefits Associated With N-Acetyl Cysteine
NAC is a simple compound, as it’s just a modified version of cysteine – a sulfur-containing amino found abundantly in your body.
But just because it’s simple doesn’t mean it isn’t up to the task of helping you take control of your health.
Below are 5 reasons why I consider NAC to be an all-star in the realm of all-natural supplements. Once you read through these, ask yourself if owning some NAC would be a wise choice so you can get back to feeling the way you should.
1 – It Boosts Glutathione Levels:
I’ve written about glutathione before, but to summarize that article, I’ll say this: glutathione is one of the most important antioxidants in the world.
One of the best things about glutathione is you make it all by yourself. The bad news is millions of people are deficient in it.
Most of the time this is because people have some kind of condition which taxes their body’s antioxidant reserves, which also wipes out glutathione reserves.
NAC helps to reverse these deficiencies because NAC is essential in helping to form glutathione.
One of the reasons we recommend NAC for glutathione support is because many of our patients do things that harm their liver.
This could be from drinking too much alcohol or from taking acetaminophen. With NAC in the mix, your body will help form more glutathione than those things can take, which helps keep your liver and your body in tip-top shape.
2 – It Can Help You Breathe Better:
There are decades’ worth of research on NAC and its clinical uses.
One of the most significant uses is for helping out respiratory health.
That might seem like a specialized treatment, but when you realize that pulmonary health concerns are one of the top 5 health concerns in the U.S., you’ll quickly see NAC for the true life saver it is.
The reason NAC is so effective has to do with both the increased production of glutathione, as well as its ability to thin out bronchial mucous. Its ability to help the lungs out in times of stress has caused NAC to become a powerful supplement frequently included in mainstream medical therapies.
3 – It Can Help Boost Immune Function:
If you understand how antioxidants work to help the immune system, then you’ll likely be able to conclude increases in the amounts of glutathione in the body can produce a corresponding increase in immune function.
Essentially, when you take NAC, you’re giving your body an extra leg to stand on so it can combat pathogens like viruses, bacteria, and more.
Here are just a few of the ways NAC can help the immune system:
- NAC helps to lower the levels of Helicobacter pylori, which has been implicated in a wide range of conditions (like acid-reflux disease and even cancer)
- NAC helps to fight multiple forms of influenza, including avian bird flu
- NAC helps thin mucous, which allows the body’s natural immune responses to work unimpeded
And many more!
4 – It Can Help Fight Cancer:
Owing to the fact NAC helps to boost glutathione levels, and glutathione is a powerful antioxidant (which are known to help fight cancer-causing inflammation), there is a strong belief NAC is one of the best cancer fighters around.
Building on its immune boosting properties, NAC’s ability to help kill the bacteria Helicobacter pylori also indicates it’s a potent cancer fighter.
Helicobacter pylori has been implicated in a wide range of gastrointestinal cancers. In fact, this bacteria is the cause of malignant gastric cancers, and is believed to be the second leading cause of all cancer deaths worldwide.
So in effect, NAC (when added to a supplement regimen) is certainly one of the best measures you can take to help prevent the formation of one of the world’s most dangerous conditions.
5 – It Can Help Support Natural Detoxification:
NAC’s ability to help boost glutathione levels plays a protective and restorative role in liver health.
Because the liver is crucial to detoxification, taking NAC can support the detox process in the event a person has “overdone it” as far as consuming too much alcohol or who are on a plethora of medications.
Dr. Zoltan P. Rona, MD writes:
NAC protects the body from many different toxins because of its content of sulfhydryl groups that can bind and inactivate herbicides, mercury, cadmium, lead, other toxic heavy metals, drugs like acetaminophen, environmental pollutants, microbes like E. Coli, carbon tertrachloride and aflatoxin.
Although not a drug, NAC has government approval as a drug to prevent liver damage from acetaminophen (Tylenol) poisoning.
A very common condition that plagues over 50 million people in North America is known as non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). With this condition, the liver stores excessive amounts of fat mostly due to insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome, or diabetes.
Liver function tests are usually elevated, indicating damage to liver cells and the liver appears grossly fatty on an ultrasound. This condition benefits from strict restriction of simple carbohydrates as well as a vigorous exercise program. Studies also show a significant improvement in liver function tests in those suffering from NAFLD with supplementation of NAC. Not only does it protect liver cells, but it also helps heal a damaged liver.
The Best Part about NAC?
Well, there are actually a few best things about NAC…
The first is this – NAC can also help out with a ton of other issues, such as:
- Shown to help keep glucose levels balanced
- Shown to help support athletic performance
- Shown to help protect the kidneys
- Shown to help provide neurological benefits
- And more
The second best thing is you can take NAC on a recurrent basis in doses of 600mg – 1,800 mg daily without any negative effects.
Your body will have no issue processing the NAC and using it to produce glutathione, while still accomplishing many of the benefits listed above.
And the third is it can be purchased inexpensively.
Keep in mind NAC’s ability to help boost glutathione is its major benefit. And, considering buying a bottle of glutathione will run you upwards of $50 -$75, the money you spend on NAC is well worth it.
