How Ashwagandha Benefits Men and Women
My goal in recommending supplements isn’t to come with all kinds of wild and wacky supplements to add to the HAIOTB product line.
If you’ll notice, it’s rather sparse when compared to other supplement manufacturers. And there’s a reason to that.
We don’t just add supplements to our line to make more sales.
I hand-pick supplements based on evidence they actually work…
And I pick them based on if they offer broad-spectrum support for your body.
Meaning, I’m not going to add a supplement to our line of products if all it does is focus on 1 little part of human health and nothing else.
That doesn’t mean I don’t find supplements like that useful, I do.
But I don’t select them as products we make (just ones that we carry in our patient store).
All that to be said, one of the supplements I absolutely love because of its ability to offer your whole body tons of well-researched benefits is ashwagandha.
I’ve written about this supplement a few times before (articles are here and here), but knowing just how much it can do, I’ve decided to write yet another article highlighting its benefits.
I think given how powerful this supplement is, and its low cost, you’ll be happy to add it to your regimen.
How Ashwagandha Benefits Men and Women Both
In millenia past, practitioners of ancient medicine like Ayurveda, depended on ashwagandha to do all kinds of things for their patients.
Ashwagandha, also known as Indian Ginseng, is one of the most popular herbs in Ayurvedic medicine.
However, one of the main reasons they turned to it was owing its ability to restore vigor and vitality to men (and women) who felt like they had fallen out of step and were simply “dragging.”
They used to call ashwagandha the “smelly horse” or more appropriately, “strength of a stallion,” because it was shown to help restore vigor, energy, and vitality.
Back then, medical professionals didn’t know a source of this “downgrade: in performance had to do with the hormones coursing through our body.
Today, we know that if hormone levels are out of balance then a lot of things can be negatively affected.
The good news is research indicates that ashwagandha can help modulate the hormones associated with stress, and sexual function.
Which leads me to the first benefit associated with ashwagandha and mens health
1 – Helps Support Healthy Testosterone Levels:
Testosterone is essential for human flourishing.
And unnatural testosterone levels are one of the leading causes of declining health in men.
Research indicates taking ashwagandha can help to maintain healthy testosterone levels in men who take it for an extended period of time. The Journal of Men’s Health published a study that showed men who took an extract of the herb had notable improvement in vitality, levels of fatigue and also saw improvements in testosterone levels.
Another study demonstrated that when men began a weight-lifting program and took ashwagandha at the same time they had t-levels that were as much as 500% higher than others who started a workout program and didn’t take the supplement.
Not only did this help with energy levels but they were also able to add more muscle mass and get stronger, faster.
2 – It May Help Boost Sexual Desire:
Centuries ago ashwagandha was revered for its aphrodisiac-like effects and purported to help enhance libido.
Whether or not it’s an aphrodisiac remains to be seen.
However, we do know that it can help positively modify how much cortisol (your body’s main stress hormone) your body releases into the bloodstream.
Evidence indicates taking ashwagandha may provide relief from chronic stress, and this has the ability to promote relaxation which may lead to enhanced sexual desire and pleasure.
And of course, if it is able to have a positive effect on a man’s testosterone levels that too can help improve a man’s libido as well.
3 – May Help With Men’s Fertility:
One of the negative aspects of living in today’s world is that all of the chemicals floating around in the air and in our food are contributing to in declining sperm counts among men, reducing fertility.
Chances are you know couples struggling with infertility, and if you do, they may benefit from ashwagandha if low-sperm count is part of the issue.
Two studies (1,2) indicated that there is an observed ability for ashwagandha to help normalize sperm count as well as sperm motility.
4 – Helps Boost Cardiovascular Health:
Another factor in men’s health is how effectively the heart functions.
Without adequate blood flow it can be difficult for a man to perform at his peak.
Ashwagandha has been shown to help boost oxygen levels in the body during maximum exertion.
In particular ashwagandha can help with Vo2 max (the maximum amount of oxygen you can use during high-intensity work) .
5 – For Women: Better Sexual Health Too
Not forgetting about women here, I’ll touch on how ashwagandha can help women gain improvement in their sex life.
In a small study from 2015, women who were experiencing temporary challenges with sexual function discovered that taking ashwagandha helmed to improve desire (libido) as well as enhanced love-making and made it more enjoyable and satisfying.
The researchers discovered that much like what happened with men, when women took ashwagandha it helped to ameliorate stress and that provided a boost in sexual satisfaction.
