Now, as far as my name, I’ve asked my mom a million times how Weston turned into Wiggy. She says if you throw a very “wiggly” baby, a rhyming big brother (piggy-wiggy…), and a lot of sleepless nights into a bag — well, that’s all she can remember because of the sleepless nights. But one thing’s for sure, she never expected it to stick. She thought it would fade when I started school but it didn’t. She expected it to be dropped in high school but it wasn’t. And no matter how many times I would introduce myself as Weston in college, I would inevitably run into someone who had known me as Wiggy and that was that….
But I can’t complain because the name always seems to make people happy. So here I am, a respected physician, a married father of two and … a Dr. Wiggy, who, I might add, is very grateful he can get people to smile and help them be healthy.
Medically, I have always been interested in alternatives — not rebellious or weird but definitely more logical. It just never made any sense to me to treat symptoms with medication rather than truly fixing the problem. And why weren’t health professionals trying to prevent problems in the first place? My brain and my gut were telling me there had to be a better way to help heal people and establish long term wellness.
And, our patients seem to agree. Often, frustrated by traditional medicine, they, too, have been seeking something different. They’ve come to us and our nontraditional “detective” work has successfully helped uncover underlying root causes, which once treated, have led many patients to healthier, more joyful lives.
I’ve found that one of the critical components of wellness is controlling blood sugar. Something so important and yet often ignored. Over the next 6 days I’m going to share some of my most effective strategies for controlling blood sugar quickly and easily.

Step 1: My Secret Weapon
I’m so glad you’re with me today that I’ve got a special surprise for you — I’m not going to make you wait through all six steps before I divulge my secret weapon. I’m going to tell you today in Step 1. Not many people know about this product (why it’s my Secret Weapon) but I want to set you up for success immediately.When you see how easy and effective Step 1 is, you’ll be excited to discover the next step. My secret weapon is a little known, yellow powder called Berberine. It’s an all-natural treatment I’ve been using for several years and its effectiveness in getting my patients’ blood sugar under control is astounding.
If you’ve never heard of it before, you’re not alone. Yet, I’ve found it to be seriously impressive in controlling blood sugar.
So what is it? Well, Berberine is one of the only plant-based treatments known to activate a special cellular enzyme called Adenosine Monophosphate-activated Protein Kinase or AMPK, for short.
Activating AMPK has been clinically shown to be one of the most effective methods for improving blood sugar. When AMPK is activated, it sends a signal to your cells — one that’s very similar to the signal they receive during intense exercise. And, just as with post-exercise, this signal prompts your body to consume available blood glucose as fuel. The result is improved blood sugar levels.
In fact, Berberine is so good at activating AMPK that clinical research shows it outperforms pharmacological counterparts by 50-200 times. AMPK activation appears to be the main mechanism for increased insulin sensitivity and improved blood sugar. As, I said earlier, Berberine is a uniquely impressive secret weapon for controlling blood sugar.
Here are a few of the studies that support the effectiveness of Berberine:
In 2008, Chinese scientists wanted to test this yellow powder’s anti-diarrheal power on people with blood sugar problems
After they ran their tests, they discovered something astounding. Not only did the yellow powder help relieve the subjects’ stomach issues, but…
when the 116 subjects involved in this study took 1 gram a day, the yellow powder pushed glucose back into the cells where it belongs! This made their plasma concentrations of blood sugar drop dramatically and increased insulin sensitivity.
A few years later, Spanish researchers ran tests to verify the authenticity of the Chinese study. To ensure their results were as precise as possible, the Spanish researchers performed one of the most accurate tests imaginable…a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial.
In this study the participants took only 500mg – 1500mg of Berberine (about 2 capsules worth) for 3-6 weeks and to their amazement, the insulin sensitivityincreased and blood sugar levels of the participants improved dramatically. In just a few weeks, their study demonstrated that this yellow powder was far more effective at improving blood sugar than almost any other substance studied for blood sugar impact.
One last study, examining the effects of Berberine on HgA1C, really convinced me that it was worth trying for my patients. As you may know, one of the best ways to know if a treatment is truly effective at keeping healthy, long-term blood sugar and insulin levels is by evaluating HgA1C levels.
Participants took only one gram (again 2 capsules worth) a day of Berberine over the course of three months and the results saw significantly improved HgA1C levels. Often times levels were reduced to the next whole number down! Once again, confirmation of the extraordinary effectiveness of Berberine.
In fact, at last count there are over 2,800 studies validating the safety and efficacy of Berberine.
I have nearly all of my patients with blood sugar issues taking Berberine, and their results have been consistent with these studies.
